Caption (back) | Acoma is probably the most famous Pueblo of prehistoric times, discovered by Coronado in 1540. Acoma and the Hopi Villages are the only ones of the old pueblos existing which correspond with the description and location given by Coronado Expedition. The church required forty years in the building. It is of enormous proportions, with walls forty feet high and ten feet thick. All of the material used was carried up with infinite toil and patience on the backs of faithful Indians, from the plains below. |
