Welcome to the Bowden Postcard Collection Online!
This project is based on our vast postcard archive, originally donated by Clyde Bowden and Charles Shields. Friends and Miami graduates, Bodwen and Shields both took an interest in collecting postcards, particularly from the first half of the 20th century. Tragically, Shields fell ill in 1986. With Bowden's help, his collection was donated to the Miami University Libraries and held in Special Collections. Fifteen years later, in 2001, Bowden again contacted the library, offering to contribute his own incredible collection. The collection is estimated to comprise of over 480,000 postcards from all places and times of the 20th century world.
The Bowden Postcard Collection Online is currently digitizing Bowden's collection, with a special focus on Ohio-based cards - although all 50 states of America are already represented in the online collection. Each postcard consists of two or more images, depicting the front and back of the card. Many cards are without printed or posted dates, and so with each postcard's record is an estimated period of origin. These date ranges are reused with permission from the North Carolina Postcards Collection at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The ongoing project is making dozens of new postcards available every week, so please come back to view the latest additions to the collection.

All postcards are housed at the Walter Havighurst Special Collections Library. For more information on the collection or the project, please e-mail the library or call (523) 529-3323.
